What is Mushroom Popcorn?
"Mushroom" popcorn is a variety of popcorn that pops into round, ball shapes. Some people also refer to this type of popcorn as "brain popcorn", or "ball popcorn", but the proper name is Mushroom Popcorn. You may have seen this type of popcorn in a gourmet popcorn shop as it is the type of popcorn most used in gourmet popcorn.
The popcorn that you typically find in stores and movie theaters is called "butterfly" popcorn. When this popcorn pops, from a popcorn kernel into a popcorn flake, you will see that it has bits sticking out all over it, often looking somewhat like a butterfly. It is the kind of popcorn most people are familiar with.
The mushrooming of popcorn kernels when popped is a natural variation, and you may even see one or two "mushrooms" in your regular butterfly popcorn. However, our Mushroom Popcorn has been carefully and naturally bred to produce many more of the round shaped popcorn flakes than usual.
Just as you can find mushrooms in your butterfly popcorn, you will still find butterflies in your mushroom popcorn. This is perfectly normal, since, as you now know, mushrooming is a natural variation. You should definitely see mostly round popcorn when you look at your bowl, and with the Organic Mushroom Popcorn variety, that would be 60% or more mushroom to butterfly.
You may be wondering why when you buy high-end gourmet popcorn or commercially produced popcorn snacks, such as Cracker Jacks, you see almost 80-90% mushroom flakes. This is because during the manufacturing process, most of the non-ball shaped popcorn is removed.
Also, the popping method plays a huge part in the end result. Commercial poppers are designed to maintain the exact temperature needed in order for the mushroom popcorn to pop to it's fullest potential. Too hot or too cold, and instead of popping into a ball, it pops into a regular butterfly.
We encourage home users to to follow the instructions we provide with each order, and experiment a few times with their equipment until they get the desired results.
