Great popcorn for kettle corn   My family loves kettle corn. Had tried regular butterfly popcorn and it came out ok. Got my first batch of their mushroom popcorn and when it popped I had more than twice the volume in the popper. We are going thru it very fast. My first order was 3 lbs and we just got a 5 lb bag. Not quite what I was expecting...   I'm not a kettlecorn fan, but wanted to try a large sized popcorn just to see what it was like. The yield was nice with very few unpopped kernels and zero burnie bottoms. The popcorn kernels themselves were very large but the hulls were tougher than I anticipated and it seemed somewhat less than fresh. Perhaps the special bowl the website offers would help with the hulls but I'm not sure it's worth the $14 to buy one. I'm on the fence about whether to purchase this variety again. Is this normal?" Regarding your "less than fresh" experience. This likely was caused by either not letting enough steam escape while popping, OR not allowing the popcorn to cool slightly before eating. As stated on our Tip Sheet which goes out with every order, "Popcorn right out of the popper is warm and yummy but is often still moist and somewhat chewy. Waiting a couple of minutes will allow enough time for the last bits of moisture to evaporate and give you the best results." 99% consistency of MUSHROOM kernels   I've tried other companies selling mushroom kernels (on ebay)—their kernels consisted of 99.9% BUTTERFLY kernels. Messages to these companies about the lack of Mushroom kernels went unanswered. Just Poppin's mushroom kernels, however, were the opposite--a good 99% consistency of MUSHROOM kernels, with a very high pop rate. And the flavor is excellent, too. A Note About Mushroom Popcorn

"Mushroom" popcorn refers to popcorn that has much more of the ball-shapes than typical "butterfly" popcorn. Regular (butterfly) popcorn on average will have maybe 5% ball shapes.

According to many growers, 35-45% ball shapes would be considered "mushroom popcorn". However, we hold our farmers to a higher standard - our popcorn averages more than 65% ball shapes (usually much more).

When you purchase commercially produced caramel corn and see perhaps 80-90% ball shapes, such as Cracker Jacks, not only are they using mushroom popcorn, but they remove most of the non-ball shapes through extensive processing.

The method of popping also plays a large part in the percentage of "mushrooms". Commercial poppers are able to maintain the exact temperature needed, so home users may need to experiment a few times with their stove-top poppers to get the desired results.
