Do you sell microwave popcorn?
Yes and no. No, we don't sell the fat and chemical laden junk passing as popcorn, prepacked in waxy paper microwavable bags, found on your megamart's shelves. Yes, we sell popcorn that pops perfectly well in the microwave. How's that for diplomacy? We also offer a microwave popcorn popper that works really well. You can use it with or without oil depending on your dietary needs, wants, desires... So at JustPoppin.com you CAN get microwave popcorn, but with a twist - you put it together yourself and you'll know exactly what's in it - popcorn, maybe some oil, maybe some popcorn seasoning, and that's all you need to have delicious microwave popcorn.
Can I make the mushroom popcorn in the microwave?
Yes, you can pop mushroom popcorn in the microwave and now, with the microwave popper it's easier than ever. In the interest of full disclosure however, usually the resulting popcorn is not as big and fluffy as when you use a pot or Whirley Pop Popper to pop the popcorn on the stovetop. Also, one other thing to remember, though nearly every kernel of our gourmet popcorn will pop when you pop it on the stove, that is not the case when microwaving it (nor is it the case with any microwave popcorn). When you are popping popcorn in the microwave, you should always remove it when the popping SLOWS, and not wait for the popping to stop. If you wait for the popping to stop, you will consistently find yourself burning your popcorn and in some cases, setting your microwave on fire. As a result of stopping when the popping slows, you will have left over kernels.
What is the absolute best home popping method?
Place oil and 3 unpopped kernels in your popper over medium heat. When all three kernels pop, add the rest of your unpopped kernels quickly and proceed with popping. This method ensures that the moisture in the kernels turns to steam quickly instead of heating and escaping slowly. Watch our video on "The Best Popcorn Popping Method" for more info. top^
Can I pop mushroom popcorn in my air popper?
If you use a hot air popcorn popper, do not add the popcorn until the popper has run fully for at least 1 minute. Only then add the popcorn. Do not even add the popcorn to the little holder cup that some hot air poppers use as it just dries out the popcorn, reducing it's "popability". The same is true of adding popcorn to a pot or stove top popper before the oil is smokin' hot (nearly) - moisture escapes from the popcorn and the pop is much less explosive and the result is a butterfly flake instead of a mushroom flake.

My mushroom popcorn looks more like butterfly popcorn, what am I doing wrong?!
The mushroom popcorn can be a bit finicky because the heat requirements are pretty specific to get the best "pop". Oil temperature of 450F degrees works great. If the oil is not hot enough, the mushroom popcorn cannot generate enough steam to produce the pressure required to pop the kernel into the mushroom ball shape and you will end up with popcorn that resembles regular butterfly popcorn. My mushroom popcorn has more hulls than I expected. Is this normal?
Mushroom popcorn, by it's very nature, does tend to have a lot of hulls. The mushroom popcorn needs the thick hull to hold in all the moisture so the steam can build up to create the explosive pop and large "mushroom" for which the popcorn is named. Because the hulls are so thick, they don't shatter when the kernel pops so you will notice a lot more of them after popping.top^
There are two ways to deal with this. The first would be to use a Kernel Katcher Popcorn Bowl. This bowl has a special compartment in the bottom which collects unpopped kernels and excess hulls. You can view a video of how the Kernel Katcher works here. The second way would be to pop the mushroom popcorn in a hot air popper. A hot air popper tends to dry out the hulls so they fall off more readily while being popped and also afterward in your bowl.
Mushroom popcorn is typically used for making Caramel or Candied Popcorn and Kettle Corn (these types of popcorn are usually highly processed, so excess hulls tend to get stripped off). It is not usually used for plain eating, although we love it that way and many of our customers do enjoy eating it with salt and butter. My mushroom popcorn seems chewy and tough. Help!
This can sometimes happen and we have several suggestions to remedy the problem. The chewy texture comes from the excess moisture in the kernel. Mushroom Popcorn has a much higher moisture content than other popcorn varieties. It needs the extra moisture to create enough steam for the explosive pop that helps create the mushroom shaped flakes. Residual moisture is always left behind. After the popcorn is poured into a bowl it needs to sit for a minute or two to let the excess steam evaporate otherwise you may find it chewy.
Also, our popcorn is much larger than regular kernels and using the popper's recommended amount is usually too much. If the recommended amount is 1/2 cup, try 1/3 cup.
Tips For crunchier Mushroom Popcorn
Mushroom Popcorn is usually used for making Caramel Corn, or other types of candied popcorn. The process of making caramel corn sort of guarantees that the popcorn is going to end up crunchy because it steams off every last bit of moisture left after it pops. If you are experiencing chewy popcorn, the following 5 Tips should help you achieve maximum crunch.
- Make sure the popcorn is well ventilated while popping (ie letting the steam escape during popping).
- After dumping into a bowl (immediately after popping), you can wait another minute or two before digging in :-) I know that's hard to do but it lets more of the steam escape which definitely results in more crunch.
- Let your hot air popper blow into the bowl of just popped popcorn to drive off excess moisture.
- A customer of ours sent in his suggestion. "... A delicious popcorn, a bit tricky for a first time user to keep it from being chewy. Once mastered, it's crisp and fluffy. Make sure to follow the directions...also, my trick for keeping it crisp is; once it is done popping, pour it into a large paper bag. The paper absorbs the steam so it doesn't get chewy. Also great way to season, pour in bag, sprinkle your seasoning and shake. Yum!"
- And finally, if it's still not crisping up the way you like after popping, you can put it on a tray in an oven or toaster oven for 3-5 minutes at 300F and it will definitely come out crispy. Remember to put on a timer so you don't set your popcorn on fire!
Is your Tender Pop hulless popcorn 100% hulless popcorn?
No, there is no such thing as 100% hulless popcorn, but ours is virtually hulless. A popcorn kernel needs a hull the way we need skin - to hold our guts in. The hull allows the moisture in the popcorn kernel to turn to steam and enables steam pressure to build up. This steam pressure is what causes the popcorn kernel to pop and reveal their delicious, fluffy insides. Our Tender Pop has a very thin hull, which means that when it pops, the hull shatters rather than sticking to the popped corn. There may still be just a few hulls, but these hulls are very small and fine.

Mushroom Flake? Butterfly Flake? What's all this flake-y talk? It's not snowing around here!
A "flake" is a piece of popped popcorn. It's popcorn farming jargon going back a ways. How should I store my popcorn?
We recommend you store your popcorn in a cool, dark, dry place in an airtight glass or plastic container. We actually use the "Lock & Lock" plastic storage containers which we have listed on our Amazon Storetop^

The Kernel Katcher bowl holds 15-16 cups of popcorn. However, we find that to really take advantage of its main feature, not more than around 13 cups is best. That allows you to put on the lid and still have enough room to swirl the popcorn around enough to let the kernels fall through.
How many cups of popcorn will I get from 1Lb of popcorn kernels?
You will get approximately 68 cups of popcorn from 1Lb of un-popped popcorn kernels.top^
